TERMITE BAITING SYSTEM
Termites are a very common pest in Malaysia, and they can cause severe damage to your home if they aren’t treated. One of the most effective ways to control termites is with a termite bait system. Termite baits are a great way to eliminate termites from your home. Unlike other methods, baiting does not require a professional or have any harmful side effects.
What is termite baiting?
Termite baiting is a pest control method used to treat subterranean termites. Termite bait stations are filled with a toxic insecticide that the termites feed on and take back to their colony. The poison then kills the entire colony, including the queen. The bait station contains a slow-acting poison placed near the termite tunnel where the termites are coming into the house.
How does termite bait work?
Termite baits use cellulose (a component of wood) that attract the termites to feed on them. The baits contain an active ingredient called Chlorfluazuron, which eliminates the entire colony after about 2 weeks to 12 weeks, depending on the colony’s size. Chlorfluazuron is a slow-acting insect growth regulator which disrupts the termite molting process. This will eventually lead to the death of workers, which can collapse the colony as shortage of workers to forage for food.
Once the termites eat the bait, the workers will return it to their colony and feed it to other members. This allows the toxicant to be distributed in the colony. The process usually takes 3-6 weeks, depending on the size of colony there are in your home. Termite baits are designed to attract termites with a food source that is irresistible to them and then kill them by spreading a deadly poison throughout their colony.
The termite control baits are easy to use — simply place them near the area where you’ve noticed signs of infestation. The baits are made from chemicals that are safe for humans but toxic to termites. These baits have been used for decades with great success.
The bait is placed in small stations around your house where they will be easily accessible by termites looking for food. These stations contain holes that allow termites to enter and leave, which is why it’s essential to place them around your house in places where you see signs of active infestation, such as mud tubes or damaged wood.
What happens when termites eat bait?
The most common type of termite bait is called an insect growth regulator (IGR). An example of IGR is Chlorfluazuron. This toxicant inhibit chitin synthesis and is also known as an anti-molting agent. The absence of chitin synthesis results in a loss of elasticity and firmness of termite’s cuticle, preventing them from molting. Eventually, the colony will collapse as many workers die, which will lead to a food shortage in the colony.
Is termite baiting system effective?
Yes! Termite baiting systems have been proven effective against subterranean termites (the ones that cause most damage). In fact, they’re one of the most effective ways to control these pests without resorting to chemicals or other more invasive methods like fumigation.
Is termite bait safe?
Termite baits are safe for children and pets, but you should keep them out of the area where you set up your system to avoid accidental ingestion of any bait.

Types of termites baiting
Termite baiting systems are one of the effective method to control subterranean termites. There are two types of termite baiting systems: In-Ground System and Above-Ground System. The goal of termite baiting is to attract termites to consume a poisonous food source. When foraging termites find the baits, they eat the poisoned food and share it with their nestmates, including the queen. This is called trophallaxis. The process of getting rid of the colony can take anywhere from 2 to 12 weeks, but most of the time it takes between 6 and 8 weeks.
1) Above-ground system (AG)
The above-ground system is installed directly on an area with active termite infestation. The poisonous bait is put directly on the termite tracks such as a mud trail that is visible above ground, such as on walls, ceilings, trees, furniture, and other things. If termites are found in a house, an above-ground station is used to get rid of them. The above-ground stations are taken down once the colony is dead, and the underground system is put in place to serve as an early warning system for a future attack.
2) In-Ground System (IG)
In-Ground System is used as a monitoring purpose. An in-ground station is put around the building with 3 meters space apart for each station. It’s both a place to keep an eye on things and a place where termites are caught. Once the termites are caught, the bait with the active ingredient will be put in the tracking station to get rid of the whole colony.
